We all sin. We also want to relate to God. As one writer described himself, "I am an angel with an incredible capacity for beer." This sets up one of the great tortures of the human soul. As the apostle Paul wrote in the New Testament, "I am unspiritual... I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do... For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do - this I keep on doing" (Romans 7:14-19, NIV). So who are we when we sin - our true selves or a shadow? What does sin do to our desire to relate to God? And how is God with all this - is it a deal breaker, or does the Bible jump into the mess of our lives and help us sort out how to deal with being both saint and sinner.
